What are the different types of water leaks?
Most water leaks fall into four main categories: roof leaks, burst pipes, leaking fixtures, and leaking underground drains. If you suspect a leak, you should act quickly and try to locate the source of the leak as soon as possible. An experienced plumber can repair it before it progresses and causes greater or even irreparable damage.
Roof leaks
Roof leaks are often noticed when or after it rains.
Causes
- Old or corroded roofing guttering and spouts
- Blockage in your guttering or rain heads
- Damaged or unsealed flashings or skylights
Signs
- Discolored spots or stains on walls or ceilings
- Dampness or damp smells
- Peeling paint
- Cracks in the plaster or ceiling
Health and safety effects
- Mould, mildew and damp problems can be very harmful to people with respiratory issues such as asthma. Mildew spores can sometimes cause severe allergic reactions, but is easily killed with bleach or vinegar.
- Ceiling damage, such as weakening of the plaster and framing materials can lead to ceiling collapse and water damage to whatever lies below.
- Fire damage is an unexpected but very serious danger of water leaks. When a leak is near or reaches the areas with electrical wiring you are at risk of short circuits and shorted wires which can result in electrical fires and serious damage. When the leak is near electrical wiring it is always recommended to turn off the electricity and have a professional deal with it.
